Phone.pngGRAMMAR

Introduction

When we write, we have the power to show tone and feeling! One way to do this is through punctuation. We need to make sure that we are using the right punctuation, or our writing may be misinterpreted.

Today, we will be learning about the function of the colon.

period - used at the end of a sentence
commas - marks a pause during a sentence
question mark - used at the end of a question
exclamation mark - used for expression when making a declaration
semicolon - used to separate two independent clauses
colon - used to separate items on a list

I went to the grocery store today; I bought a ton of fruit. I bought these things: apples, pears, and oranges.
Our teachers make education fun; we learn so much. In ELA, we cover the basics of English: reading, writing, and grammar.
