Introduction

Hey writers! You started writing your personal narratives in our last writing lesson, so make sure you pull up your Personal Narrative Slideshow. Links to an external site. Today, we will be focusing on dialogue. Dialogue is when two or more characters are speaking out loud. We want to AVOID this conversation:

"Hey," I said.

"Hey," she replied.

"What's up?" I asked.

"Nothing."

This is not great dialogue because it does NOT move the story forward! Dialogue is a great tool to help readers understand characters and how they interact with one another, but it should only be used when necessary.

We also will be focusing on adding transition phrases to our text, so our reader can keep track of what is happening and when.
