Parts of a Sentence

Introduction

Hi grammarians! Today, we will be discussing the definition of phrases and clauses! It's important to know these because it will help us understand what is truly a sentence and what is a run-on or a fragment (more on that later).

Phrases and clauses are groups of words.

Phrases act like a part of speech, but can never be a sentence because it lacks either a subject or a verb

Clauses can be a sentence, but not always! Clauses have a subject and a verb. A clause could be a dependent clause, meaning that it DEPENDS on another part of the sentence to make it full. A clause could also be independent, which makes it a complete sentence.
