Introduction

Yesterday, we traced our steps all the way back to the American Revolution. Today, we will travel back in time again and think about how physical geography may have also influenced territorial expansion, and how physical geography can create barriers, or gateways.

Imagine that you are living in the time of Westward Expansion. For generations, your family has lived on the east coast of the U.S., but there are promises of more opportunity if you leave everything you know, load up a covered wagon, and travel westward. You are given the following map to help guide your journey. Take a look at the map, and document in your journal: What barriers do you notice? What areas of the map might be more like gateways?
