Effects of the Civil War - Day 118

Introduction

Today we will look at one more image in our picture walk through time that shows the effects of the Civil War. One of the reasons that the Union States prevailed is due to William T. Sherman’s campaigns. As he “Marched to the Sea,” he destroyed railroads and ports that were essential to the Confederate States.  He burned everything in his path in a tactic called, “scorched earth”.  The south was not only forced to surrender, it was devastated. We will learn more about this devastation in our next module. For today, focus on what life might have been like for southerners after losing the war.
