Effects of the Civil War - Day 117

Introduction

We have learned that one of the main causes of the Civil War was the issue of slavery. When the Confederate States did not win the war, they began rejoining the Union. In turn, they had to accept the ideas of the Emancipation Proclamation, "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free."

Today we will continue our picture walk through time and focus on the effects of the war on former slaves. We will learn much more about how the Civil War impacted the lives of African-Americans in our next module. For today, really think about what freedom means to you, and what it may have meant to freed slaves.
