Effects of the Civil War - Day 116

Introduction

Time Travelers! So far in this module, you have learned all about the Civil War. Over the next three days, we will be doing a picture walk through time to reflect on the effects of the Civil War.

As you can imagine, war always has serious impacts. The Civil War was no exception. It was the deadliest war in American history. The actual number of lives lost is still subject to debate. Some estimate that there were around 210,000 soldiers killed in action and 625,000 total casualties. The Southern States  lost around 30 percent of their white males from ages 18 to 40. A large percentage, almost 70 percent of these deaths were due to disease.

Let’s begin our picture walk through time by doing an image analysis of one of the battles that we researched. The following picture is a depiction of The Battle of Gettysburg. This battle claimed over 51 thousand lives and was the deadliest of the Civil War. What actions do you see in this image? What do you notice about the flags, uniforms, and weapons? Pretend you are in this image. How would you be feeling? Think about these questions as you respond to the image below. Document your thinking in your journal.

  • Click on the question marks on the picture and jot down your ideas in your journal.
