The People of the Civil War - Day 111
Introduction
The Union and the Confederate States had many important leaders during the Civil War. In this lesson, we will research some of these leaders and their roles during the Civil War. Let’s begin by looking closer at the role of William T. Sherman, Union General. As you may remember from our last lesson, William T. Sherman led the Atlanta Campaign. In early November 1864, Sherman ordered people to leave the city of Atlanta, Georgia, before burning it to the ground. Following the burning of Atlanta, Sherman set out to conquer Savannah, Georgia, destroying property on the way. This event is known as Sherman's "March to the Sea." Sherman knew this would have a strong effect on the minds of Southerners and show them that the Union could not be stopped.
