🔺 Abolitionism and Suffragism Day 91
Abolitionism and Suffragism - Day 91
Introduction
In the last module, we learned about what happened when Americans began moving westward into new territories. We also learned how this movement and migration affected native people, immigrants, and how land was acquired and made into new territories. This was a turbulent time in America for sure, and our next module will be just as turbulent. Once people in America started settling in again, and creating a new culture, they really started to focus on how all people were being treated. Vast differences began to emerge.
Americans began to see that not all people in America were being treated in the same ways, or being given the same natural rights that the Constitution was created to protect. Our next module focuses on the social reform that began to divide our nation and fuel the Civil War. In the 1800s, Americans became very involved in social reform movements. Two of these movements were abolition, or ending slavery, and women's suffrage, or allowing women the right to vote.
People began to take risks to improve the lives of others. Did you ever take a risk to help another person? Has another person ever taken a risk to help you?
Abolitioniists - Harriet Tubman
We will learn about many influential people during this time, people that were brave and willing to take risks to help others, but let’s begin by watching a video of one of the most influential abolitionists, Harriet Tubman.
While you watch the video, use your journal and write down:
- What do you think, what you wonder, and what you notice about the information presented.
- Why did Harriett Tubman replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill?
- How are her contributions still inspiring others today?
