Territorial Expansion - Day 72

Territorial Expansion - Day 72

Introduction

In the last lesson, we learned about what happened when Americans began moving westward into new territories. We also learned how this movement and migration affected the Native Americans.  In this lesson, we will shift our perspective back to an American settler during this time. During this time in the 1800’s, the United States gained new land. Many settlers and immigrants moved west. In this lesson, we will research some of the most important land acquisitions during this time.

In the video below, historians are referencing a popular novel, Little House on the Prairie, written by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  This novel is based on her own experiences and tells the story of a family moving and living in the west throughout the late 1800s. Much like our Time Traveler’s Diary, this novel acts like a first hand account, because it helps us understand what life was like in the west. While you watch it, you will need to write down what you think, notice, and wonder. See below for specific instructions.
