The War of 1812 - Day 54

The War of 1812 - Day 54

Introduction

One great example of nationalism can be found in the creation of our national anthem.

Francis Scott Key was a gifted amateur poet. When he saw the American flag flying over Fort McHenry the morning after the destruction, he began writing a poem about how he felt. Later, he turned the poem into a song with four verses.  The song was published by a local printer, and from there gained popularity. Today, we will look at this document Links to an external site., the lyrics of the national anthem, and respond to some questions in our journals.
