Investigate Balanced and Unbalanced Forces - Day 17

Introduction

As you explored in the last lesson, balanced and unbalanced forces can affect the motion of an object.

When forces are balanced, the object will remain at rest. When they are unbalanced, the object will be set in motion.

Today, you will continue to investigate to discover what forces are needed to set objects with different masses in motion. You will also investigate the forces required to change the motion of objects that are in motion.

Newton’s First Law of Motion states that an object at rest will stay at rest UNLESS it is acted upon by another force. Record your observations in your Science Journal. How did the mass of objects change the force needed to set an object in motion AND stop the object in motion? Based on your observations, what claims can you make about force, motion and the mass of objects? Write your claims in your journal and explain your reasoning using evidence from your exploration. Ex: I claim that… I know this because…
