Investigate Balanced and Unbalanced Forces - Day 16

Introduction

As you explored in the last lesson, balanced and unbalanced forces can affect the motion of an object.

When forces are balanced, the object will remain at rest. When they are unbalanced, the object will be set in motion.

Today, you will continue to investigate using a simulation to determine how balanced and unbalanced forces affect the motion of a cart of candy.

As you explore and learn, see if you can use your knowledge to predict how forces will affect the cart of candy.

Directions:

  • Click on the "NET FORCE" button below  Net Force
  • Once opened, click to make sure you can see the "VALUES" of the forces as you explore. Check the box that says VALUES. It is the box in the middle.

Balanced Forces are a set of forces acting on an object such that they do not affect its motion. These forces are equal and opposite of one another. Record what you observed in your journal. What did you notice about the values of the net forces? How were you able to keep the forces balanced? What effect did balanced forces have on the object? What happened when the forces were unbalanced? What effect did that have on the object? Based on your observations, what claim can you make about how balanced and unbalanced forces affect the motion of objects? Write this claim in your journal.
