Investigate: How Sound Travels - Day 21

Introduction: Can You Hear Me Now?

In this lesson, we will continue to dig deeper into the science of sound. We will investigate how sound, once produced by a vibration, reaches your ears so that you can hear it.

Do you remember how vibrations produce a sound? Well… how does that sound reach your ear? Sound travels. Sound travels in waves. Watch the video below to learn about the science of sound waves. Take some time to listen to the beautiful sounds created by the instruments of the orchestra if you’d like, too!

Directions:

  • Grab your Science Journal and pencil.

  • Read the directions on the slide below

Your Task: In your Science Journal, draw a picture of someone playing a musical instrument. Add an audience member who is listening. Add sound waves to your drawing to show how the sound travels from the instrument to the listener’s ears. Then add a caption explaining how sound travels.
