Investigate: Production of Sound - Day 19

Introduction: Instrument Inspiration

In previous lessons, you learned that a sound is produced when something vibrates. We saw evidence of this with our vocal cords and with several musical instruments.

Now itโ€™s time to show what you know. You will be using your creative ideas AND your scientific understanding to design an instrument.

In this lesson, you will watch a video for inspiration and begin to plan a design for your original instrument.

Directions:

  • Grab your Science Journal and pencil.

  • Go on a supplies scavenger hunt throughout your home to find household items that could be used to build an instrument that vibrates to produce a sound.

  • Experiment with several different materials to determine what vibrations produce sounds you like.

  • Draw a clearly labeled prototype sketch in your Science Journal, showing how you will use the materials you have decided to use in your design.
