🔵 Connect Subtraction Strategies to Algorithms Day 39

Connect Subtraction Strategies to Algorithm

Introduction

Mathematicians!  As you noted in the last lesson, the standard algorithm for subtraction is a shorthand way to find the difference between numbers.  This way still keeps in mind place value and the place value relationships of numbers.  As you were learning about the standard algorithm for subtraction, did you note any similarities to addition?  We know that addition and subtraction are inverse operations.  Inverse operations are operations, such as addition and subtraction, that have the reverse effect, or opposite, of the other.   With that in mind, use the visual below to help you to determine what other similarities you may find.  Those findings will be useful in today’s activity.
