Unit 8, Lesson 14-- Building 3- D Shapes
Lesson 14-- Building 3- D Shapes
Introduction
Hello Mathematicians! Today we will build 3- dimensional shapes.
Take a look at the images below. What do you notice? What do you wonder? Jot down your thoughts in your math notebook.
Now think about these challenge questions:
- What do you think the next three cubes would look like? What will the dimensions of each layer be?
- What do you think the tenth image in the pattern would look like?
- What would the cube before the first picture look like? Why do you think so?
Interactive
Part 1 Directions:
- Find materials to build your own 3D shapes. Some ideas include using toothpicks, straws, or popsicle sticks for line segments, and clay or tape to hold together the edges and vertices.
- Build the shape that matches each clue.
Part 2 Directions:
- Today's challenge is to answer the question: Will it make a cube?
- Think about each cube net. Could it be folded to make a cube? Think about a cube's faces, and imagine the top, bottom, front, back, and sides.
- Check your answers using the interactive.
