Lesson 25--  Math in Our World: Making Pizza

Introduction

Hello Mathematicians! Today you will use what you have learned about fractions to make pizzas.

Today, you will help Gabby’s Perfect Pizza Pie Palace of Pepperoni and Peppers to make a special pizza order.  First, listen to the order.

It's time to help prep the pizza. Design the pizzas in the interactive below, or print this worksheet Download worksheet.

  • Add pizzas to the pans by clicking the fraction circle and selecting how many parts.  
  • The first pizza should be partitioned into halves.  The second pizza should be partitioned into quarters (fourths).
  • Drag toppings to complete the orders.
    • One pizza will be half pepperoni, half peppers.
    • One pizza will be 1 quarter pepperoni, 1 quarter peppers, 1 quarter pineapple, and 1 quarter pickles.

The order is ready!  Watch as the customer comes to pick up the pizza.

Now, cut the pizzas into 8 slices. 

  • Use the line tool to partition the pizzas into eighths (or a straight edge and scissors if using the worksheet).
  • Think about how the toppings were distributed on the pizza before cutting into eighths, and now after.

  • Now it's your turn to design your own pizzas!
  • Use the interactive below.  Or, create your pizza by tracing a circle template (like a paper plate) onto paper and cutting or drawing toppings.
  • Have fun dividing up your pizza however you wish, and adding any toppings you like.  You can use the ones suggested, or think of your own.  Be creative! Don't forget to cut your pizza into 8 slices.

Part 2 Directions:

  • Describe your pizza by explaining the distribution of your toppings using fractions.  Here is an example:
