Lesson 1-- Mathematical Modeling: Let's Go Camping (Day 1)

Introduction

Hello Mathematicians! In this unit, you will put together all that you have learned in third grade to think about math in real situations.  Today, you will think about planning for a camping trip.

Visual

Take a look at these images.  What do you notice?  What do you wonder? Jot down your thoughts in your math notebook.

Smore, campfire, fall leaves, fishing. Hiking. Warm clothes. Tent. Hammocks. Campers, RVs. Thermometer 59 degrees.

Would you rather go camping in the summer, fall, winter, or spring? Explain your reasoning.

Part 1 Directions:

  • Good news! Your family is going on a camping trip! Here are some important considerations for your trip:

    • It is fall, and the temperature is forecasted to be as low as 52° with a high of 65°.
    • There is a slight chance of rain showers.
    • The trip will last 2 days.
  • Today, your job is to help plan the trip.  You will use mathematics to make decisions about where your family should go on the camping trip. Brainstorm a list of activities you would like to do when camping!

Part 2 Directions:

  • Take a look at the concept map below.  There are many variables you could consider when answering the question "Where is the best place to camp?".
  • These questions can help guide your investigation.  Choose one of the questions below to research, or chose one of your own from your "Wonder" list.
