Unit 8, Lesson 12-- Classifying Quadrilaterals

Lesson 12-- Classifying Quadrilaterals

Introduction

Hello Mathematicians! Today we will practice classifying quadrilaterals based on their attributes.

Take a look at these polygons.  Which one does not belong? In your notebook, answer these questions:

  • How is the shape different from the other polygons?
  • Is there another polygon that does not belong?  If yes, what it is and why?  If no, explain why not.

Rectangle. Rhombus. Square. Pentagon.

Visual

Take a look at this chart and how quadrilaterals are related.  What do you notice?

Quadrilateral, Trapezoid, Parallelogram, Rectangle, Square, Rhombus, Kite

Interactive

Part 1 Directions:

  • In the interactive below, classify each shape.

Part 2 Directions:

  • Today you will go on a quadrilateral scavenger hunt!  Look around your classroom, home, or community for quadrilaterals.
  • Open the interactive slide deck, and make a copy.
  • Find as many as you can of each of the 5 types of quadrilaterals.  Keep a tally of all the quadrilaterals you find. After you complete the scavenger hunt, make a graph of your results.

In Your Math Notebook:

  • In your math notebook, explain why a square can be classified as a rectangle, parallelogram, as well as a rhombus.
  • Share your thinking in a discussion on the Next page.
