Introduction

Hello Mathematicians! Today we will use what we have learned to describe the attributes of polygons.

Part 1 Directions:

  • Open the interactive slide deck link below, and make a copy.
  • Complete each Venn diagram by sorting the polygons based on angles and lines.

Part 2 Directions:

  • Today you will go on a polygon scavenger hunt!
  • Look around your classroom, home, or outdoors for polygons.  Remember: polygons are closed figures with straight sides.
  • Take a picture or draw each shape (use a straight edge, like a ruler or the edge of a piece of paper, to help you).
  • In your notebook, for each polygon, describe:
    • The sides:
      • How many sides?
      • Are there any sets of parallel sides?
      • Are any of the side lengths congruent?
    • The corners:
      • How many corners/ vertices?
      • What kind of angles are the corners? (right?, acute?, obtuse?)
      • Are there any congruent angles?
      • Is the shape convex or concave?
    • Lines of symmetry:
      • Are there any lines of symmetry?
