Introduction

Hello Mathematicians! Today we will learn a strategy for determining area with larger numbers.

What is the area of a rectangle that is 15 units long and 5 units wide?  How can we show it with base ten blocks?

Part 1 Directions:

  • Find the area of the rectangles:
    • Use the base ten rods and cubes to tile each rectangle.
    • Add the partial areas to find the total area.

Part 2 Directions:

  • Represent each problem with an area model to solve.
  • In your notebook, represent each rectangle with drawings, numbers, and words.
