Introduction

Hello Mathematicians! Today we will explore examples of when we might be able to measure area around us in the real world.

Part 1 Directions:

  • Open the interactive drawing assignment and make a copy.
  • Use the clues to determine how to cover the grid.

Part 2 Directions:

  • You want to surprise your mom by planting a flower garden. You have measured a 10 ft by 10 ft area of land in the backyard equal to 100 square feet.
  • You want to plant five of your mom’s favorite flowers, one type of plant in each of the five regions.  What five flowers would you plant?

Flowers.  Rose, Daisy, Petunia, Tulip, Periwinkle, Gardenia, Dahlia, Cone Flower, Daffodil.

  • Open the interactive drawing link below, and make a copy.  You will use the colored tiles to create arrays to represent the flower regions.
  • Each of the five flower regions should be rectangular and labeled with the flower’s name, the dimensions of the region and the
    number of square units (the area) for the region.
