Unit 7, Lesson 8-- Exploring Area of Rectangles
Lesson 8-- Exploring Area of Rectangles
Introduction
Hello Mathematicians! Today we will continue to explore the area of rectangles.
Take a look at these two rectangles. They each are covered with partially completed arrays. How can we find the area of these rectangles?

Part 1 Directions:
- Below is a sketch of Martin’s Garden. The shaded areas are the flower beds.
- Which flower bed has the largest area? How do you know?
- Show your thinking in your math notebook using drawings, numbers, and words.
Part 2 Directions:
- Switch the geoboard to the rectangle building board. Build your own gardens composed of rectangles.
- Determine the area of each by counting the number of squares that would fit inside.
- What do you notice about area as you build your rectangles? Jot down your thoughts in your math notebook.
In Your Math Notebook:
Let’s get out our math journals and work through the following application problem. Make sure you read the problem carefully, draw a picture to match your thinking and write and solve an equation.
R (Read the problem carefully.) Mrs. Murphy dug a rectangular flower bed that was 5 yards longs and 4 yards wide. What was the area of the flower bed? D (Draw a picture.) W (Write and solve an equation.) |
