Part 1 Directions:

  • Open the interactive drawing assignment, and make a copy.
  • Use the tiles to measure the rectangles in square units.  Be sure that when you are building your rectangles, there are no gaps or overlaps.

Part 2 Directions:

  • Practice building each of the following rectangles. Determine the area of each by counting the number of square tiles.
    • 2 rows of 6 tiles
    • 8 rows of 5 tiles
    • 1 row of 12 tiles
  • In your notebook, draw a model of the rectangles, and label the area of each in square units.  For example, a rectangle that is 3 by 5 would be 15 square units.

In Your Math Notebook:

Let’s get out our math journals and  work through the following application problem. Make sure you read the problem carefully, draw a picture to match your thinking and write and solve an equation.

Read, Draw, Write. DONE!

R (Read the problem carefully.)

Mr. Jones built a patio with square bricks.  He laid 10 rows of bricks, with 12 bricks in each row.  What is the area of Mr. Jones' patio?

D (Draw a picture.)

W (Write and solve an equation.)
