Unit 7, Lesson 3-- Measurement to the Fourth of an Inch

Lesson 3--  Measurement to the Fourth of an Inch

Introduction

Hello Mathematicians! Today we will be learning about how to measure using one- half and one- fourth measurements.

Take a look at this ruler.  Count aloud the increments marked by fourths:

0/4, 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 7/4, 8/4, 9/4, 10/4, 11/4, 12/4

What do you notice about the numerators?  What do you notice about the denominators?  how are the whole numbers written as fractions?  Jot down your thoughts in your math notebook.

Let’s get out our math journals and work through the following application problem. Make sure you read the problem carefully, draw a picture to match your thinking and write and solve an equation.

Read, Draw, Write, DONE!

R (Read the problem carefully.)

Isaac measured a piece of bark, and got a length of 2 ¼ inches.  His friend Jason said this can’t be right because Isaac didn’t line the bark up with the 0 mark.  Isaac’s teacher says that Isaac still got the correct answer.  How can Isaac prove to Jason that he got the correct measurement?

D (Draw a picture.)

W (Write and solve an equation.)
