Part 1 Directions:
- In today's math lab, you will experiment with mixed numbers and improper fractions.
- Open the Fractions: Mixed Numbers Intro Lab.
- Change the "max" arrow at the top to 2, 3, or 4.
- Use the yellow arrows to change the numerator and denominator of the fraction you are building.
- Change the model type at the top of the interactive (pie/ circle model; bar models; cylinder model; cake model; line/ ruler model).
- Build 3 fractions whose numerators are larger than the denominator. Show them in your math notebook using drawings, numbers, or words.
- Open the Fractions: Mixed Numbers Intro Lab.
Part 2 Directions:
- Complete the chart below in your math notebook.
- Each row of the chart contains various representations of the same fraction, but some are missing for you to fill in. For example, the first row shows you the number 1 1/4 (one and one-fourth) as a circle/ pie model. Your job is to fill out the missing fraction bar model, number line, and improper fraction.
- Use the interactive to help you build, draw, and name the models.

In Your Math Notebook
Let’s get out our math notebook and work through the following application problem. Make sure you read the problem carefully, draw a picture to match your thinking and write an answer with numbers and words.
R (Read the problem carefully.) You have chocolate bars left from making smores at camp. Each chocolate bar is cut into 8 pieces. You have 12 pieces left. What fraction represents how many pieces of chocolate bar you have left? (Write as an improper fraction and as a mixed number.) D (Draw a picture.) W (Write an answer with numbers and words.) |
