Unit 6, Lesson 13-- More Equivalent Fractions

Lesson 13-- More Equivalent Fractions

Introduction

Hello Mathematicians! We have learned about finding fractions equivalent to one half and to one whole.  Today we will learn about finding more equivalent fractions by comparing bar models.

Visual

Each of these colored bars is equivalent to 1 whole.  What other equivalent fractions do you see?

Fraction bars. 1 whole. 2 halves. 3 thirds. 4 fourths. 6 sixths. 8 eighths.

Directions:

  •  Use bar models to find as many equivalent fractions as you can.
  • Write an equality expression for each set that you find in your notebook.
    • For example, 1 fourth is equivalent to 2 eighths.  1/4 = 2/8
  • Use these questions to guide you:
    • Which fractions are equivalent to 2/3?
    • Which fractions are equivalent to 6/8?
    • Which fractions are equivalent to 1/6?

In Your Math Notebook

Let’s get out our math notebook and  work through the following application problem. Make sure you read the problem carefully, draw a picture to match your thinking and write an answer with numbers and words.

Read, Draw, Write, DONE!

R (Read the problem carefully.)

Janice is baking a pie.  The recipe calls for 1/2 cup of sugar, but Janice only has a cup that measures eighths.  How many eighth cups of sugar should Janice measure that is equivalent to 1 half cups?

D (Draw a picture.)

W (Write an answer with numbers and words.)
