Lesson 2-- Unit Fractions

Introduction

Hello Mathematicians! Today we will learn about unit fractions.

Interactive

Part 1 Directions:

  • Today, you will "experiment" with fractions using an interactive lab.
  • Using the interactive, navigate to the Fraction: Intro Lab.
  • Build the following unit fractions: ½, ⅓, ¼, ⅙, and ⅛ (one-half, one-third, one-fourth, one-sixth, and one-eighth) using the following steps:

    • Drag the numeral cards into the numerator (top number of the fraction) and the denominator (bottom number of the fraction) slots.
    • Then, drag the appropriate sized unit fraction piece from the top bar to make a match.
  • Draw and label each of these unit fractions in your math journal.
  • What do you notice about the size of the pieces as the denominator increases (ex: the size of a ½ piece versus a ⅙ piece)? Share your thinking in the discussion on the Next page.

Part 2 Directions:

  • In the interactive below, write the unit fractions.

In Your Math Notebook:

Let’s get out our math notebook and  work through the following application problem. Make sure you read the problem carefully, draw a picture to match your thinking and write an answer with numbers and words.

Read, Draw, Write, DONE!

R (Read the problem carefully.)

Susie pulls out her plate as she prepares to eat dinner.  Her plate has 4 equal sections.  She places broccoli in one of the parts.  How much of Susie's plate has broccoli?

D (Draw a picture.)

W (Write an answer with numbers and words.)
