Unit 5 Lesson 13-- Estimating Time to the Quarter Hour

Lesson 13-- Estimating Time to the Quarter Hour

Introduction

Hello Mathematicians! Today we will learn about estimating quarter hours.

Read each row to skip- count time by 15 minute increments.  Can you fill in the next 3 times in your math notebook?  What patterns do you notice?  Jot down your ideas in your math notebook.

Skip Count Forwards by 15 Minute Increments
12:00 12:15 12:30 12:45
1:00 1:15 1:30 1:45
2:00 2:15 2:30 2:45
3:00 __:__ __:__ __:__

  Video

The clock in this video shows that it is almost 8:30.  What do you notice about the hour hand?

Part 2 Directions:

  • The interactive clock below is one- handed.  It only has an hour hand.  Use it to answer the following questions.
  • Where would the hour hand be if it was….
    • 1:30?
    • 6:00?
    • Quarter after 4?
    • Quarter till 10?
    • 8:15?

In Your Math Notebook

Let’s get out our math journals and  work through the following application problem. Make sure you read the problem carefully, draw a picture to match your thinking and write and solve an equation.

Read, Draw, Write, DONE!

R (Read the problem carefully.)

Jenni got home from soccer practice and looked at the clock.  She saw that it was about a quarter past 6 o'clock.  Draw what Jenni saw in your notebook.

D (Draw a picture.)

W (Write and solve an equation, or label your drawing.)
