Unit 5 Lesson 13-- Estimating Time to the Quarter Hour
Lesson 13-- Estimating Time to the Quarter Hour
Introduction
Hello Mathematicians! Today we will learn about estimating quarter hours.
Read each row to skip- count time by 15 minute increments. Can you fill in the next 3 times in your math notebook? What patterns do you notice? Jot down your ideas in your math notebook.
12:00 | 12:15 | 12:30 | 12:45 |
---|---|---|---|
1:00 | 1:15 | 1:30 | 1:45 |
2:00 | 2:15 | 2:30 | 2:45 |
3:00 | __:__ | __:__ | __:__ |
Video
The clock in this video shows that it is almost 8:30. What do you notice about the hour hand?

Part 2 Directions:
- The interactive clock below is one- handed. It only has an hour hand. Use it to answer the following questions.
- Where would the hour hand be if it was….
- 1:30?
- 6:00?
- Quarter after 4?
- Quarter till 10?
- 8:15?
In Your Math Notebook
Let’s get out our math journals and work through the following application problem. Make sure you read the problem carefully, draw a picture to match your thinking and write and solve an equation.
R (Read the problem carefully.) Jenni got home from soccer practice and looked at the clock. She saw that it was about a quarter past 6 o'clock. Draw what Jenni saw in your notebook. D (Draw a picture.) W (Write and solve an equation, or label your drawing.) |
