Unit 4, Lesson 9-- Analyzing and Interpreting Data

Lesson 9-- Analyzing and Interpreting Data

Introduction

Hello Mathematicians! Today we will work on using what we know about bar graphs to look for patterns in data and answer questions about them.

Directions:

  • In the interactive below, analyze the graphs.
  • Then, answer questions about the data displayed.

Part 1 Directions:

  • Open the interactive drawing link, and make a copy.
  • Data was collected after surveying students about their favorite after-school activities. Use the data in the table to create a bar graph.
  • Then, analyze and interpret the data to answer the questions.

Part 2 Directions:

  • Open the interactive drawing link, and make a copy.
  • Your principal was working on a graph for an upcoming meeting and she accidentally spilled her drink on the graph. It’s ruined and she needs your help to recreate the graph! The graph should show the number of students in each grade, but you can only see the data for fourth grade.

Graph with mud. Number of students in the school. Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4.

  • Use the information given to help recreate the graph for your principal.

  • Now use your completed graph to answer the following questions in your math notebook:
    • How many students are in Grades 1 through 4?
    • How many more students are in Grade 1 compared to Grade 2?
    • How many more students are in Grades 3 and 4 combined, compared to Grade 1?
    • Write one more question about the data and answer it.
