Unit 3, Lesson 6 -- Dividing into Equal Rows

Lesson 6-- Dividing into Equal Rows

Introduction

Hello Mathematicians! Today we will use arrays to divide into equal rows. Consider the following problem:

Your class is going to have a special presentation and your teacher has asked you to figure out a good way to place 24 desks in your room for seating.  There is only one requirement.  All the desks must be placed in an array with equal rows and columns.

Use the tiles to find ways to arrange the desks into equal rows.  Can you find all 8 ways?

Part 1 Directions:

  • Think about the desk arrangements you created.  Now think about the shape of your classroom. What is the best desk arrangement so that every student can see the presentation?
  • In your notebook, explain with pictures and words why this would be the best arrangement.

Part 2 Directions:

  • After the presentation is over, your teacher decides that she no longer wants the desks arranged into one large array.  She wants the desks arranged into small groups that all contain the same number of desks.
  • How could she arrange 24 desks into small groups?
  • Use the counters to divide 24 counters into equal groups?  In your notebook, use drawings, words, and equations to show your thinking of the best arrangement.
