Unit 1, Lesson 14-- Measuring Liquid Volume: Fluid Ounces

Lesson 14-- Measuring Liquid Volume:  Fluid Ounces

Introduction

Hello Mathematicians! Today we will learn about measuring liquid volume in fluid ounces.

Take a look at this image.  Which container do you think can hold the most water?  Why?  Jot down your thoughts in your math notebook.

Bowl of water. Jar of water.

Video

When we think about how much a container can hold, we are thinking about the liquid volume. Liquid volume is the amount of space that a liquid takes up.

Part 1 Directions:

  • Watch the PBS Learning video:  "Bianca's Babysitting Blues."
  • Then, answer the following questions in your math notebook:
    • How did Bianca figure out how much liquid was 9 ounces?
    • Bianca found that one of the tall bottles held less liquid than a bottle that was shorter. How was that possible?

Part 2 Directions:

  • Follow the directions in the slides below.  Record your data in your math journal.
  • How close were your estimates?  Anything surprising?

In Your Math Notebook

Let’s get out our math journals and  work through the following application problem. Make sure you read the problem carefully, draw a picture to match your thinking and write and solve an equation.

Read, Draw, Write, DONE!

R (Read the problem carefully.)

Samantha is hosting a party and plans to make a special punch for her guests. She needs to mix different fruit juices to create the perfect flavor. She needs to mix 32 fluid ounces of orange juice, a 16 fluid ounces of pineapple juice, and 24 fluid ounces of cranberry juice. Her mixing container has a capacity of 90 fluid ounces.  Is the container big enough?  Why or why not?

D (Draw a picture.)

W (Write and solve an equation.)
