Unit 4, Lesson 7-- Using the Midpoint to Round to the Nearest 100

Lesson 7-- Using the Midpoint to Round to the Nearest 100

Introduction

Hello Mathematicians! Today we will practice using the midpoint between two hundreds to round.

First, think about this question:

Would you rather add two 3 digit numbers rounded to the nearest 10, or four 3 digit numbers rounded to the nearest 100?

Answer the question using the sentence frame "I would rather add ____ because ____ .”  Use pictures, models, words, numbers, or symbols to justify your choice.

Let’s get out our math journals and  work through the following application problem. Make sure you read the problem carefully, draw a picture to match your thinking and write and solve an equation. Remember sometimes we don’t need an exact answer. Look for key words like “about how many” to help you know when an estimate is expected to be given.

Read, Draw, Write. DONE!

R (Read the problem carefully.)

Roger had 432 toys. He gave away 97 of his toys. About how many toys does he have now?

D (Draw a picture.)

W (Write and solve an equation.)
