Lesson 3-- Rounding 3 Digit Numbers to the Nearest 10

Introduction

Hello Mathematicians! Yesterday we worked on rounding to the nearest 10 when we had 2 digit numbers. Today we will begin to think about how we can use rounding to the nearest ten to find friendly numbers for 3 digit numbers too!

Directions:

  • Use a number line to round each of these numbers to the nearest ten.
  • In your notebook, show:
    • the tens on either side of the number
    • the midpoint between the tens
    • the number
    • which ten it would round to

In Your Math Notebook:

Let’s get out our math journals and  work through the following application problem. Make sure you read the problem carefully, draw a picture to match your thinking and write and solve an equation. Remember sometimes we don’t need an exact answer. Look for key works like “about how many” to help you know when an estimate is expected to be given. Make sure you use your knowledge of rounding to the nearest ten!

Read, Draw, Write. DONE!

R (Read the problem carefully.)

Priya and her family traveled from their home in Atlanta, Georgia to Orlando, Florida. They traveled a distance of 448 miles. To the nearest ten, approximately how many total miles did Priya’s family travel? Explain your reasoning.

D (Draw a picture.)

W (Write and solve an equation.)
