In Your Math Notebook:

Let’s get out our math journals and  work through the following application problem. Make sure you read the problem carefully, draw a picture to match your thinking and write and solve an equation. Make sure to find an exact answer when there is not a clue that tells you to estimate.

Read, Draw, Write. DONE!

R (Read the problem carefully.)

The taller bookshelf had 287 books. The shorter bookshelf had 156 books. How many books were on both shelves combined?

D (Draw a picture.)

W (Write and solve an equation.)
