Unit 2, Lesson 28-- Splitting Arrays

Lesson 28-- Splitting Arrays

Introduction

Hello Mathematicians! Today we will look at how to make the "hard" multiplication facts easier.

Take a look at this image. In your math notebook, answer this question:  How are these arrays of donuts the SAME but DIFFERENT?

Interactive

Part 1 Directions:

  • In the interactive below, make an array to show 7 X 4.
  • Now use different colored tiles to break 7 X 4 into two smaller arrays.
  • In your notebook, write the multiplication expressions for each smaller array: (__ X __) + (__ X __)
  • Add the partial products to get the total product: __ + __ = __ , so 7 X 4 = __

Part 2 Directions:

  • In your notebook, draw an array to show 9 X 7.
  • Now break 9 X 7 into two smaller arrays.
  • In your notebook, write the multiplication expressions for each smaller array: (__ X __) + (__ X __)
  • Add the partial products to get the total product: __ + __ = __ , so 9 X 7 = __
