Introduction

Hello Mathematicians! You learned that bar models are a useful tool for comparing numbers.  Today, we will learn how to use bar models when solving other types of addition and subtraction problems.

Directions:

  • In your math notebook, draw bar models to help you solve the following story problems.
  • Explain how drawing bar models helped you solve the problems.  
      1. There were 78 people at the beach. 53 people left because it started to rain. How many people stayed at the beach?
      1. There were 80 people at the beach on Tuesday.  Some people left to go eat lunch.  Now there are 43 people on the beach.  How many people are left on the beach?
      1. There were 45 people at the beach on Friday. On Saturday there were 92 people at the beach. How many more people were at the beach on Saturday than on Friday?
