Lesson 1-- Counting to 1000

Introduction

Hello Mathematicians! In our first unit, we will be thinking about numbers to 1000.  First, let's think about counting.

Take a look at these popsicle sticks.  About how many do you think are in this pile?  Get out your math notebook, and jot down an estimate.  An estimate is a reasonable guess, or a guess that makes sense.  For example, 14 would not be a good estimate because that number is way too small, and 1 million would not be a good estimate because that number is way too big!

Now, think about how we could figure out exactly how many popsicle sticks there are.  What would you do to count and organize these sticks?  Write your ideas in your notebook.

In this video clip from PBS Learning, the Cyber Squad has to figure out how to count and organize a large amount of golden eggs.  Watch how they use grouping to help them.  What size groups do they create?


 Assignment

Part 1 Directions:

  • Find a collection of objects to count.  For example, popsicle sticks, beans, candies, beads, paper clips, etc.  Try to make a pile of 100- 1000 of your objects.
  • Estimate how many items are in your set.  Write your estimate in your notebook.
  • Decide how to group and organize your collection to make it easier to count. 
  • Once you have your collection organized and counted, draw a representation of your groups in your math notebook. 

Part 2 Directions:

  • Weight can be measured in ounces and pounds.  A slice of bread is about 1 ounce (oz.) and a shoe is about 1 pound (lb.).  There are 16 ounces in a pound, so ounces are much smaller than pounds.
  • Estimate in pounds and ounces how much you think your collection weighs.
  • If you have access to a scale, weigh the items in your collection.
  • How close was your estimate?
