Phonics Day 1: ir, er, ur r controlled words phonics lesson

Introduction

Welcome to day 1 of our phonics lesson. This week we will look at ir, er, and ur words. Otherwise known as r-controlled words. An ‘R-Controlled’ vowel is one immediately followed by the letter ‘r’ and can no longer be pronounced as a long or short vowel. We often say that r is in charge, or we call it bossy r because that is all you hear, just like the ar words in our previous lesson. Today we will substitute vowel sounds in words to make the bossy r sound, read r-controlled words, and read our decodable story.

Let’s roll.
