Phonics Day 1: ar R-Controlled Words

Introduction

Welcome to day one of our phonics lesson. This week we will be looking at ar words. Otherwise known as r-controlled words. An ‘R-Controlled’ vowel is immediately followed by the letter ‘r’ and can no longer be pronounced as a long or short vowel. We often say that r is in charge, or we call it bossy r because that is all you hear. Today we will substitute vowel sounds in words to make the bossy r sound, read r-controlled words, and read our decodable story.

Let’s roll.
