Day 1: Understanding Equivalency
Introduction
Hi Mathematicians,
Today we will learn more about the equal sign. We will use a new math tool, a balance scale, to determine if equations are true or false. In this lesson, you should watch the video, complete the practice problems in your math journal, and play the interactive matching game. You will need your math journal and a pencil for this activity. If you would like, you can use counters or unifix cubes.
Work hard and do your best!

Activity
Ok, Mathematicians, Let's get to work! Please get your learning coach and work on these math problems in your math journal.
In Your Math Journal: Please use cubes (or the virtual math scale) to decide if these equations are true or false. If an equation is false, please try to fix it. Record the correct equations in your math journal.
- 2 + 2 = 3 + 0
- 4 + 1 = 1 + 5
- 3 + 3 = 2 + 4
- 7 + 1 = 1 + 6
- 5 + 3 = 4 + 4
