Day 10: Solving Word Problems with Unknown Parts

Introduction

Hi Mathematicians,

Today you will learn about the commutative property of addition and also explore how to use the equal sign to write equations. Please complete the following activities:

  • Watch the video.
  • Solve and record some practice problems in your math journal.
  • Play the Interactive matching game.

You may want to have some unifix cubes and paper/pencil handy for these activities.

Have fun learning!

Ok, Mathematicians, Let's get to work! Please get your learning coach and work on these math problems in your math journal.

In Your Math Journal: Use cubes (or virtual cubes) to decide if the equations below are true or false. If an equation is false, try to fix it. Record the correct equations in your math journal.

  1.   6 + 2 = 2 + 6
  2.   5 = 4
  3.   3 + 4 = 4 + 3
  4.   7 + 1 = 1 + 8
  5.   9 = 9

You may use the cubes below to help you solve your problems.
