Phonics: Lesson 5 - Rereading to Build Fluency

Introduction

Today, you will read words with r-controlled vowels and write in response to reading.

Let’s review how to read unfamiliar words.

Step 1. Look for the word parts at the beginning of the word (prefixes).
Step 2. Look for the word parts at the end of the word (suffixes).
Step 3. In the base word, look for familiar spelling patterns.
Step 4. Sound out and blend together the word parts.
Step 5. Say the word parts fast. Adjust your pronunciation as needed.

Wave the Flag

On June 14, we observe Flag Day to mark the day when our first flag was adopted. It is believed that Betsy Ross made the first flag back in 1777. It had thirteen stars and stripes, which stood for the thirteen states. The thirteen white stars formed a circle on a dark blue background. The thirteen stripes were red and white.

Today our flag has fifty white stars, which stand for our fifty states. But it still has thirteen stripes. Whenever a state joins the United States, a star is added. The last time a star was added was in 1960 after Hawaii became our fiftieth state.

On Flag Day, people fly flags in front of homes, schools, and stores. Many towns and cities have parades, and everyone wears red, white, and blue. It is a day when we honor both flag and country.
