Phonics: Lesson 1 - Identifying Words with Prefixes

Introduction

Today, you will read and spell words with prefixes.

We are going to learn two prefixes. A prefix is a group of letters placed at the beginning of a word to create a new word.

Look at the word prepay. The prefix pre- is added to the base word pay. The prefix pre- means “before.” So the word prepay means “pay before.” When you prepay for something, you pay for it before getting it or in advance.
Now look at the word reread. The prefix re- is added to the base word read. The prefix re- means “again” So the word reread means “read again.”

In Your Notebook: Draw a two-column chart. Write pre- and re- in the top columns on the chart.
