Introduction
Today, you will read and spell words with hard and soft c.
Visual
We are going to learn about hard and soft c. The letter c can have a hard or soft sound.
Look at the words: cave, cost, and cuddle. In these words, the letter c stands for the /k/ sound. It is called hard c. When c is followed by the vowel a, o, or u, it usually is pronounced /k/.
Now, let’s look at the words: cell, city, and fancy. In these words, the letter c stands for the /s/ sound. It is called soft c. When the letter c is followed by the vowel e, i, or y, it is usually pronounced /s/.

In Your Notebook: Draw a two-column chart. Write Hard c and Soft c in the top columns on the chart.
