Step 2. Look for the word parts at the end of the word (suffixes).
Step 3. In the base word, look for familiar spelling patterns.
Step 4. Sound out and blend together the word parts.

Traveling

My favorite way to travel is by airplane. Last June, my parents and I flew from the West Coast to the East Coast to visit my Uncle Mark in Atlanta. It was my fifth and longest flight.

Each time I fly, I love it more! Dad always lets me sit near the window so that I can see all the action as we take off and land. The most exciting parts of any flight are the takeoffs and landings. I also like it when we fly above the clouds. When the pilot announces our speed and height, I write the numbers in my notebook, along with other details about the flight.

My parents enjoy flying, but they prefer traveling by car. Mom thinks that driving across the country is a great adventure. She and Dad like to make many stops along the way. They say it’s their way of investigating interesting places they wouldn’t normally see. Although I like traveling by car, too, flying will always be my first preference.
