Phonics: Module 10, Lesson 1 (Day 46): Closed Syllables

Phonics: Lesson 1 - Identifying Closed Syllables

Introduction

Today, you will identify words with closed syllables. You will be working with two-syllable words and learning how a closed syllable pattern can help you figure out the vowel sound in that syllable.

When you divide the word banjo into syllables, you divide it between the two consonants in the middle. Notice that the first syllable ends in a consonant. That makes it a closed syllable. A closed syllable often has a short vowel sound.

In Your Notebook: Please draw a two-column chart. Write Closed First Syllable and Closed Second Syllable in the columns at the top of the chart.

Read each word. Sort the word under the correct category. After completing the sort, please copy this sort into your phonics/word study journal.
