Introduction
- Today, you will read and spell words with variant vowels.

We are going to learn about variant vowels.
- Variant vowels are defined as the group of letters that produce the same vowel sounds. Let’s look at some examples.
- Look at the words below. Each word has the long sound of oo as in spoon or the short sound of oo as in brook.
- The patterns ew and ue have the long sound of oo, and the spelling patterns ould and ull contain the short sound of oo.
- The oo spelling can stand for two different sounds.
Task
In Your Notebook: Draw a four-column chart. Write Long oo and Short oo in the top columns on the chart.
