Writing: Module 32 , Lesson 3 (Day 158): Extended Written Response: Informational Text-2
Adding Compelling Quotes: The History of Popcorn
Video
Writers, today I think you’re ready for another challenge! I would like for you to practice adding compelling quotes to your extended written response. As we found with the passage that you wrote on Money, you can make this piece of writing even richer, if you include compelling quotations from the texts directly into your writing.

When you quote from a text you want to find a short, powerful part of that author’s writing that fits exactly with what you are saying. The purpose of the quote is to powerfully back up your words. Just a phrase or a sentence will do.
Directions:
-
Read the two passages on popcorn.
-
Respond to the prompt and include 1 quote from each text to back up your response to the prompt. Once you have the quote, it’s helpful to use some phrases that let the reader know that you are quoting someone else. Here are some sentence-starters that may help:
- According to the passage, [title] “...”
- In the passage [title], it says, “...”
- This evidence from [title of passage 1 or 2] supports my answer, it says, “...”
or come up with one of your own. When you’re done writing, use the checklists to be sure you’ve done your best work.
-
Be sure to export and save your response, as you will be using this writing in the next lessons.
